About

  • 21 month program of Bible study, Bible reading, and Bible memorization
  • Sequence of seven "semesters" - from DC101's foundations to DC403's conclusion
  • Topics with Bible reading and smaller group meetings during three "semester breaks"
  • Guided self-study through material designed to enhance a man's walk with Christ and empower one to be a more effective leader within the kingdom of God
  • Systematic walk through a set of topics, skills, and experiences that will encourage a man to become a more effective disciple of Christ - a program rather than simply a set of good lessons or a good Bible course

Prerequisites

  • A hunger to walk with Christ
  • An availability to attend weekly meetings
  • A willingness to do 4-5 hours of homework per week

Overview

  1. Bible Memory - Over the 21 months, you will memorize at least 70 verses

  2. Bible Reading - Over the first nine months, you will read the New Testament, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, and a sampling of the Psalms.  On average, you will read about 12 chapters per week.  In the final 12 months, you will read the rest of the Old Testament at a slightly faster pace.  During the three semester breaks, you will read Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Isaiah.

  3. Bible Study - See the organization of topics within the course below.

FAQ's About DC

  1. What if I need to miss a week of class?  Your leader can make arrangements for you to Skype or conference into class.  Additionally, each week is offered on multiple days through different churches around the city.  For example, if you miss your Monday morning class, you can go on Thursday or Friday instead.  If you are unable to attend a particular week and your absence is for a good reason (e.g., adopting a child in China, traveling all week because of work), it's no big deal to miss some weeks here and there.  If attendance is a general problem, you may need to redo a (10 week) semester or you might be encouraged to return when your schedule is more manageable.

  2. What does DC cost?  A lot of time, primarily! Group members tell us they spend, on average, about five hours a week in preparation.  then, you have a group meeting once a week for one and a half hours (except for three semester breaks).  In terms of money, the first semester is, by far, the most expensive - since you are paying for a DC101 book, a supplemental book, a small administrative fee, and the overnight Spiritual Disciplines retreat.  After that, over the remaining 18 months, the other six DC books cost $90 and the other required books cost about $55.  These costs are split up over the remaining six semesters over the 18 month period.

  3. Is DC really 21 months long?  Yep, DC is divided into seven "semesters" - each about ten weeks long.  We ask people to commit to the first semester (to see what it's like) and then to recommit each semester afterward.  Of those who complete DC, most go straight through the program.  But some step out for a while and return later.  Life happens, so some people cannot complete DC in one fell swoop.

  4. How is DC different from other bible studies?  Of course, there are many fine Bible studies available.  But beyond a deep study of Romans or an in-depth study of spiritual gifts, DC is meant to be a "program" of study - where one picks up a set of skills, knowledge, disciplines, and so on - to become a more effective disciple of Christ and to become more competent and confident as a leader in the home and a lay-leader within the Church.

  5. Does DC include accountability?  Not directly.  There is no explicit accountability component within DC.  but accountability is a by-product of the process - both in terms of spiritual growth enjoyed by individuals and the depth of relationships developed in such a group.

  6. When and where do groups meet?  All new groups start in the fall.  As a first class, we are a DC group at Northeast on Mondays from 6:00 - 7:30 am or 6:30 - 8:00 pm. If this time is inconvenient, we will be adding groups at other times as soon as we have enough people to fill a one (please complete the I'm Interested form below).  Additionally, we have made arrangements with other local churches that offer the course on different weekdays, in the evenings and some in the evenings.  The greatest value is that are exposed to the material, not necessarily where you get it.  In a nutshell, we're open to having groups whenever and wherever supply and demand fit - if enough group members are interested and if we can get co-leaders to lead those groups.  If you have any questions or preferences, let Tom know when you send him your contact info or when you register.
